The fire that occurred at Paarl Print on 17 April 2009 was a tragic and unforgettable event for all persons involved, including the management and employees of Paarl Print. Paarl Print has, on several occasions, publically committed to determine the origin, cause and spread of the fire with the primary aim to ensure that a similar event does not reoccur.
Paarl Print believes that through the expertise of independent specialists, the origin, cause and spread of the fire have been determined. Paarl Print accepts the findings of these specialists, namely that the fire originated in the canteen on the mezzanine floor of the bindery, that it was caused, in all probability, by the auto-ignition of cooking oil in an oil fryer and that the reason for the extremely rapid, uncontrollable and unique spread of the fire through the facility was as a result of the ignition of the thermal under-roof insulation material.
Paarl Print is committed to participating in the inquiry held by the Department of Labour and reconfirms its commitment to the well-being of its employees and other stakeholders.
