The National Teaching Awards driven by the Department of Basic Education, provides an opportunity to publicly thank the outstanding work of teachers that tirelessly work towards creating an educated generation of future leaders.

President Jacob Zuma was in attendance and delivered a keynote address encouraging all teachers to continue to work hard for the betterment of the country. He touched on the fact that more than 8 million children from poor households are exempted from paying school fees.
“About 9 million children receive free meals at schools, many of whom come from homes where parents have no money to prepare lunch boxes for them,” said President Zuma.
The host of the awards, Honourable Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga, said: “The country has been able to celebrate exceptional improvements in the education system in the past 20 years and credit must go to the teachers”.
Aaron Ganesh, Managing Director for Paarl Media KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday 6 March, handed over the Kha Rhi Gude Mass Literacy Volunteer Supervisor award at the ceremony to Ms Jane Motlatsi from the Free State. Jane Motlatsi has been involved with Kha Ri Gude for six years, working for three years as a Volunteer Teacher before being promoted in 2011. She is responsible for overseeing a number of centres in Bloemfontein and was introduced to the programme while working at a crèche. For Motlatsi the most rewarding aspect of her work is guiding and mentoring her volunteer teachers so that they produce quality lessons and take pride in their work.
The Kha Ri Gude Mass Literacy Campaign was launched in February 2008, with the intention of enabling 4,7 million adults above the age of 15 years to become literate and numerate in one of the eleven official languages
The event showcased the exceptional work of educators countrywide who are testament to the bright future of education.
