Paarl Media Cape, the flagship printing plant of Novus Holdings was recognised for its quality in publication gravure printing at the award ceremony held for the European Publication Gravure Award 2016 on 27 September 2016 in Dusseldorf, Germany. The local printing plant known for its streamlined processes and advanced technology was awarded a commendation for the TFG Club magazine.

“This recognition is a big honour for us as it reflects what we strive to achieve for all of our customers – to produce world-class products using the latest technological innovations,” says Kelvin Pillay, Managing Director of Paarl Media Cape.

Aimed at celebrating technical innovation and achievement in gravure production technology, the award competition is sponsored by the European Rotogravure Association (ERA), a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting users of the gravure printing process, and the Eurographic Press, the association of leading European trade journals for the graphic arts industry in sixteen European countries.

Paarl Media, the print division of Novus Holdings which were formerly known as the Paarl Media Group, is a member of the ERA and Paarl Media Cape was the only African company represented at the awards ceremony. Other ERA members engaged in publication gravure printing include Burda Druck (Germany), Roto Smeets Group (Netherlands), Polestar (UK), Abril (Spain), Dai Nippon Printing (Japan) to name a few.

This year’s competition featured modified categories focusing on the different applications of publication gravure printing, based on product type which included magazines, catalogues, supplements and inserts or flyers. All the categories were open to both members and non-members of the ERA and no entry fee was charged.

Participants in the publication, packaging, and decorative printing sectors were allowed to submit up to two entries in each printed category. Paarl Media Cape entered the Magazine, Catalogue and Insert categories. Printed samples submitted for entry were judged according to various aspects of product quality. These included register (colour, backup, ribbon and fold), tone (density, gradation and colour balance), detail in images and text, evenness of print fold accuracy, job complexity, and the absence of printing faults.

“The ERA commendation is a true testament to Paarl Media’s high calibre of service and ongoing commitment to deliver excellent quality printed products on every order,” says Tony Walker, Managing Director of TFG’s publisher, Highbury Safika Media.
