Novus Holdings (JSE: NVS), previously known as the Paarl Media Group, has installed a new packaging gravure press for the production of labels and wraparounds at their Cape Town facility.

Imported from Italy, the new press came into operation in September and forms part of the Group’s diversification process in expanding its print on packaging capability.

“In addition to our existing portfolio of self-adhesive label printing solutions, we see the value in the wet-glue wraparounds and shrink sleeves label market in South Africa as well as the African continent, and with this new press, we can confidently produce high-quality labels for the upper and top end food, beverage, cosmetics, and petrochemical markets,” says Keith Vroon, Chief Operating Officer at Novus Holdings.

The new Cerutti Rotogravure Printing Press Model R98X is the first of its kind in South Africa and offers high speed production with the latest technology assisting in quality control and waste management. As the widest packaging format press, it can print on paper, film and metalized papers. Depending on the layout, the press can easily produce in excess of 30 – 60 million labels in 24 hours.

“Our staff has received training to operate the new equipment and processes, and we will see full production coming through in the next 12 months. With this sophisticated press technology, we have the flexibility to produce labels for every packaging requirement in the best possible time,” adds Vroon.

Although the publication print division remains at the core of Novus Holdings, labels delivered 45% growth in its contribution in the financial year that ended 31 March 2015 and is set to grow further.

Novus Holdings services South Africa and customers across the wider African continent through its print production of all medium to long run requirements of magazines, retail inserts, catalogues, books, newspapers, commercial work, labels, educational materials. The Group also provides security printing (such as ballot papers and examination papers), as well as digital printing and manufacturing of tissue products.

As one of the Group’s existing entities, Paarl Labels offers a wide range of finishing options which include inline hot foiling, cold foiling, screen printing, laminating, embossing, UV varnish, die-cutting, back printing and security holograms.

Novus Holding listed on the JSE in March this year.
